In the 1980s Odebrecht had already begun its internationalization process with projects in Peru and Chile, while also investing in the diversification of its business. In 1986, the search for ways to strengthen the Engineering area led to the acquisition of Tenenge - Técnica Nacional de Engenharia S.A. – one of the largest Brazilian companies in the area of industrial assembly.

Tenenge took part in approximately 40% of the activities of the state-owned steel complex, as well as the installation of one third of domestic hydroelectric energy facilities. It built the Ilha Solteira, Capivara, Paraibuna, São Simão, and Paulo Afonso IV plants, and coordinated the assembly of the Itaipu hydroelectric facility (photo). In the offshore construction and assembly industry, it has provided its civil works and electromechanical assembly services to the thermoelectric center of the Duque de Caxias Refinery, for Petrobras.
