In Brazil, OEC – Infrastructure develops engineering and construction projects that generate benefits for society. Its latest deliveries include the Carioca 1, 2 and 3 Arenas used for the Rio Olympics, as well as the International Broadcast Center (IBC), the Main Press Center (MPC) and the common areas of the Olympic Park in Rio de Janeiro. Another noteworthy project was the urban requalification of Rio’s port area, which was christened Porto Maravilha and today houses the Museum of Tomorrow.
The contractor also helps to strengthen Brazil’s production capacity by improving urban mobility and logistics through investments in transportation systems, ports and airports. The highlights in this sector include Line 4 of the Rio Metro, which already has been delivered, and the ongoing construction of Line 5 of the São Paulo Metro.

In the energy sector, its portfolio includes the construction of 85 hydroelectric power plants
In the energy sector, its portfolio includes 85 hydropower plants, 17 thermal power plants, two nuclear power plants, dams and 5,700 kilometers of transmission lines. The contractor is currently building the hydroelectric plants of Baixo Iguaçu in the state of Paraná and of Belo Monte in the state of Pará. In all, OEC - Infrastructure has delivered projects with combined generation capacity of 65,000 MW.
The contractor also manages assets in the power industry and makes investments that leverage projects for Brazil’s engineering and construction industry. Some of the projects receiving investments by the contractor include, among others, the Santo Antônio Hydroelectric Plant (3,568 MW) in the state of Rondônia, which will be the country’s third largest hydropower plant in assured power, and the Teles Pires Hydropower Plant (1,820 MW) on the border of the states of Mato Grosso and Pará, which has the capacity to power a city of around 6 million people.
In Angola, Odebrecht is constructing Angola’s largest dam, the 2,057-MW Lauca Hydroelectric Plant (civil engineering and electromechanical assembly). The company is also responsible for the civil construction and electromechanical assembly of the Cambambe Hydroelectric Plant, infrastructure works for the future Lobito refinery, and the Luanda Roadways Project, an urban renewal project underway in the Angolan capital.

Also in Africa, the Group is present in Mozambique, where it has worked on projects that are contributing to the development of the north of the country, such as the coal terminal at Pier 8 in the Port of Beira and the Moatize Coal Mine, both for Vale. Another highlight is the construction of Nacala International Airport, awarded the International Property Awards prize for best architectural design for public buildings in Africa in 2015.
In Portugal, Odebrecht completed construction of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Plant in the north of the country, applying innovative engineering and construction solutions. In the United Arab Emirates, Odebrecht executes the deepest and most complex sewage pumping station in the world, through the Pump Station project in Abu Dhabi.

In Argentina, it is building a water treatment system in the North Zone, responsible for improving the water supply in the northern suburbs of Buenos Aires province.
In Colombia, it is building the 528-km Ruta del Sol highway - in synergy with Odebrecht Latinvest - and the Boyacá Transverse Highway, rehabilitating 49 km of roads. The company is also carrying out a project to restore the navigability of the Magdalena River, considered the most important waterway in that country.
In Cuba, it has built the Port of Mariel and begun the rehabilitation and expansion of Havana Airport. In addition, it manages the 5 de Septiembre Sugar Mill.
With 29 years of experience in Ecuador, it is building the 93-km La Esperanza Aqueduct, and the 150-km Pascuales-Cuenca multipurpose pipeline.
Operating in Mexico for 25 years, Odebrecht Engineering & Construction – Infrastructure delivered two important projects in the country in 2016: the Los Ramones II North Pipeline (452 km) and the Braskem Idesa polyethylene plant, with the latter considered Latin America’s most modern petrochemical complex and requiring investment of US$5.2 billion. The two construction projects combined created over 30,000 direct jobs at their peak. The contractor also continues to provide earthmoving services to Pemex to prepare platforms for the Tula Refinery Reconfiguration.
In Panama, it has completed major projects in the areas of urban mobility, infrastructure, sanitation, energy and housing. It is currently working on the expansion of Tocumen International Airport, building the road connecting Santiago and Vigui, and expanding the Metro, with the construction of the second line, which is 21 km long.
In Peru, Odebrecht built the new terminals at Matarani Port. The port is considered one of the most modern in South America by its automation in the reception, storage and concentration of iron ore, being able to process 2,300 tons of the product per hour.
In the Dominican Republic, it is responsible for the construction the Punta Catalina Thermoelectric Plant (720 MW) - which will contribute to the improvement of the nation’s energy sector.
In Venezuela, the company is working on important projects such as the Simón Bolívar International Airport in Maiquetía, the Line 5 of the Caracas Metro and the Caracas-Guarenas-Guatire subway.
In the United States, Odebrecht Construction USA, projects currently underway include the Grand Parkway in Texas and retrofitting projects at Miami International Airport. The company recently completed the infrastructure works at the Port of Miami and Fort Lauderdale International Airport in Florida.

In 2016, Odebrecht Engineering & Construction received the Global Best Project award from the U.S. magazine Engineering News-Record (ENR), in the “Airports” category, for Nacala International Airport in Mozambique. This project also was recognized by International Finance Magazine as the country’s best in 2016. In the previous year, the contractor won the same award, this time in the category “Roads and Highways” for the Cinta Costera project in Panamá, and in the category “Railroads” for the engineering project for Line 1 of the Lima Metro in Peru.
Odebrecht also was named Most Admired Company in Brazil, for the tenth straight year, by the magazine Carta Capital; Best Construction Company, for the fourth straight year, by Revista Ferroviária; and Biggest Best Global Construction Company in Hydropower Plants, for the eighth time, by Engineering News - Record (ENR).
In Argentina and Mexico, Odebrecht was named one of the Best Companies To Work For by the Great Place to Work Institute. Also in Mexico, for the ninth straight year, it was recognized by the Mexican Philanthropic Census as a socially responsible company. In the United States, Odebrecht Construction USA was named one of America’s Safest Companies by the magazine EHS Today and one of the Best Companies to Work For in Florida by the magazine Florida Trend.
In Angola, it garnered the Friend of Nature Award from the Ministry of Environment and the Excellens Civitas Award sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). In Ghana, Odebrecht was recognized as Engineering Company of the Year in Social Responsibility by the Centre of CSR - West Africa.
The Group was created in 1944 and the company that would later become Construtora Norberto Odebrecht was responsible for the first contracts. Since its founding, the company´s work has been characterized by innovation and the use of the most advanced construction methods for the time. The Belo Horizonte building (photo) is one of the main milestones for that period, built in just nine months compared to the normal time required in that era, which was three years.
There were soon other projects in Bahia that helped build the construction company's reputation. In 1953, it earned a new client, Petrobras – with which it built a strong relationship over the years that continues even today – and began the process of development in the Brazilian Northeast.
In 1969, the company emerged on the Rio de Janeiro landscape to build the Petrobras head office: this was the start of its national expansion, one which allowed Odebrecht to play a leading role in major construction projects and manage complex logistics projects. In the 1970s, it had more than 500 contracts all over Brazil and began investing in special technology, such as subways, nuclear power plants, major airports and bridges. Even in the midst of these business diversification and internationalization processes, the company never stopped growing and developing its operations in the Engineering and Construction sector. In the 1980s, it merged with the São Paulo company CBPO - Companhia Brasileira de Projetos e Obras, the sixth largest among the country's major construction companies.
Odebrecht began its international operations in Peru in 1979, where it has been present for 37 consecutive years. Serving public- and private-sector clients, the company later expanded its operations to Africa, where it began its activities Angola in 1984, and to Europe, where it started operating in Portugal in 1988.
Its expansion in Latin America continued in Argentina (1986), and since then it has established a presence in Colombia (1993), Ecuador (1987), Mexico (1992) and Venezuela (1992). In the 2000s, it began operations in the Dominican Republic (2002), Panama (2004), Cuba (2010) and Guatemala (2013).
Its presence in the US started in 1990, when Odebrecht Construction was the first Brazilian company to build a public works project in that country: the expansion of the Metromover (photo) – the elevated transportation system servicing the downtown area of Miami, Florida.. In 2003, it began operating in the UAE, where it is present to this day.
