Two Odebrecht Engenharia & Construção projects won the "Global Best Projects" award granted by the Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine. The construction of the new RIOgaleão airport terminal and the development of the Rio 2016 Olympic Park, both in Rio de Janeiro, received the top award in the Airports and Sports/ Entertainment categories, respectively. Founded in 1917, ENR is the world leader in news and analyses on the construction sector.
According to the magazine, the winning projects were selected by an independent jury consisting of industry professionals with vast global experience. Selection criteria included innovation, contribution to the global community, safety, aesthetic and execution quality, with the emphasis on how globally diversified the project team is. The jury also considered how the project benefits the local community and the construction sector.
"Having in our portfolio projects that either won or were nominated for ENR awards makes us proud, since the selection process is rigorous and is conducted by the best qualified professionals. It is, undoubtedly, the recognition of all Odebrecht members who worked on the Olympic Park and Galeão projects, which prove the technical excellence of our company," highlighted Fernando Pacheco, Regional Officer of Odebrecht Engenharia & Construção in Rio de Janeiro.
Details of all the selected projects will be published in the October issue of ENR. The awards ceremony will be held in October in New York City, during the ENR Global Construction Summit.
This is the fourth consecutive year that Odebrecht is among the winners at the Best Global Projects of ENR. In 2016, the Ethylene XXI Petrochemical Complex in Mexico in the Industrial category and the Nacala International Airport project in Mozambique in the Airports category, both built by Odebrecht Engenharia e Construção, won the Award of Merit at the ENR 2016 Global Best Projects.
In 2015, Odebrecht won the Best Global Project award for projects related to Line 1 of the Metro system in Lima (Peru), in the Railways category, and the construction of Cinta Costera 3 (Panama), in the Roads and Highways category.
In 2014, the sanitation project for the city and for Panama Bay, as well as the Urban Renewal of Curundú, also in Panama, had won the same award in the Water and Residential categories, respectively.
In 2013, Odebrecht won the Best Global Projects award in several categories: in the Airports/Ports category for the Miami International Airport North Terminal project; in the Rail category, for the AirportLink Metrorail Extension in Miami; in the Environment category, for work on the Floodwall on the I-10 highway in New Orleans. The company also won the Award of Merit in the Bridges/Tunnels category for the construction of the Del Coral Highway in the Dominican Republic, and in the Cultural category, for the construction of MIA Mover in Miami.
