Braskem, the largest petrochemical company of the Americas and the world leader in production of biopolymers, announces the construction of two new laboratories for chemical analysis and polymer testing. The purpose of this R$1.5 million investment is to improve support to development of products and services offered to customers of the petrochemical company. Spaces located in Technology and Innovation Center in Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), are expected to be open in October this year.
One laboratory will be focused on X-ray analysis to evaluate residual content and cristallinity of polymers. Generation of knowledge brought by these techniques will permit creation of new products with distinguished properties, as well as support to development of catalysts, thus reducing Braskem’s technological dependence.
While the other space will be dedicated to analysis of barriers to gas passage in polymer films. Through a simulation process, product effectiveness is identified to prevent entry of oxygen or other gases in food and pharmaceutical packaging applications, agrochemical drums and fuel tanks. Therefore, it is possible to expand applications’ safety, duration and compliance with regulatory requirements. Refurbishment will increase the capacity to conduct tests already carried out by the petrochemical organization.
News demonstrate our effort to offer necessary support to our customers by providing structure for tests, measurements and analyses. This makes processes for possible adjustments more dynamic and guarantees better quality of products that arrive in the market. Finally, this investment strengthens our commitment with innovation and development of plastic chain”, says Nércio Hexsel, CTI coordinator.
Currently, Braskem’s Technology and Innovation Center has 43 professionals in Rio Grande do Sul State, including chemists, engineers and technicians. In December 2014, Innovation area’s portfolio had 261 projects for the development of new products and processes, totaling net present value of US$2.5 billion. In the same year, 88 patent requests were filed, totaling 852 documents.
Braskem is the largest thermoplastic resin producer in the Americas. With 36 industrial plants distributed throughout Brazil, the United States and Germany, the company produces more than 16 million tons of thermoplastic resins and other petrochemical products annually. The world's largest biopolymer producer, Braskem has the capacity to manufacture 200,000 tons of polyethylene derived from sugarcane ethanol each year.
