April 7, 2011 – The Odebrecht Organization has launched a new company to consolidate its operations in the area of defense and security – Odebrecht Defesa e Tecnologia. With decades of experience in the sector, the company will concentrate its activities on the development and production of integrated public security and national security systems based on the customized use of the top technologies available.
“Odebrecht Defesa e Tecnologia is equipped to manage and install major developments,” said Roberto Simões, the company’s CEO. “It benefits from Odebrecht’s international experience designing projects in highly complex environments, structuring the financial architecture of investments, and primarily, absorbing, elaborating and employing advanced technologies," said Simões.
An important step for the feasibility of the new business was the recent acquisition of control of Mectron Engenharia. With 20 years of experience offering services to the Armed Forces, Mectron manufactures missiles and high technology products for the aerospace market, including radars and aviation and communication, control and command systems The company is currently designing and manufacturing aeronautical equipment for onboard civil and military platforms for the aerospace market in the avionics sector, as well as energy, telemetry and telecommand systems.
In 2010, Odebrecht established a partnership with EADS Defence & Security to supply integrated solutions in systems for the Armed Forces and civil security. The joint venture includes the creation of a Brazilian industrial base, but will also operate in other countries.
The company will work in partnership with the French company DCNS to install the naval shipyard and base complex that will serve as site for the construction and operation of four conventional submarines and one nuclear submarine under the Brazilian Navy’s National Submarine Development Program.
