The Bahia State Electricity Company (COELBA) and Fonte Nova Negócios e Participações (FNP) will install a solar energy plant at Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova, in Salvador, with the capacity to generate 750 MWh per year, equivalent to the average consumption of 3 Brazilians.
The plant will have 500kWp of installed power and will be built during the first half of next year, with the expectation to begin operating by the 2014 World Cup. Marcos Lessa, President of Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova, stated that the solar plant will reduce energy consumption at the arena by 10% and will also generate benefits for the Environment, considering that the resources are renewable and non-polluting.
With an investment of approximately R$ 5.5 million, the installation of the solar plant is part of the Strategic Research and Development Project “Technical and Commercial Arrangements for Inserting Photovoltaic Solar Generation into the Brazilian Energy Matrix,” launched in August 2011 by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL).
The project is being undertaken by the concessionaires of the Neoenergia Group (Celpe, Coelba and Cosern) in partnership with Odebrecht Properties and OAS for use of photovoltaic solar energy at Itaipava Arena Pernambuco and Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova, involving total investments of R$ 15 million. The Pernambuco plant will begin operating still this month and has an installed power of 1 MWp.
